Head of Software Development - £40-45K PA basic + bonus (earnings £50k+ pa)

Experience and qualifications:

Minimum 2:1 degree in Computer Science, with focus on OOP and database
Minimum five years’ experience at Senior Developer level
Experience of Team Leadership
Experience in managing target driven development
Experience with cost and budget management


About the company:


Our client is a full service digital agency based in Bedford, with a sales office in London.
The company has fifteen years’ experience in providing web based solutions for businesses and has accrued a substantial portfolio of past and current clients which include Worldwide Corporates.
The USPs of the business are in providing cost effective web design and content management solutions for large businesses and this is achieved through with the iCentric CMS, offering all of the functionality and features of costly equivalents such as Sitecore, Sitefinity & Episerver.
The business also provides digital marketing and support services.
The business owner is actively involved in a business development capacity and the Managing Director is also very hands on with project management.
The team are relatively young on the whole and like to socialise outside of work. The business pays for weekly five-a-side sessions and is open to any suggestions for team activities.



Job description:


This role provides a high degree of variety and responsibility for the successful candidate, mixing actual development with management and commercial responsibility, with an approximate ratio of 70/30 respectively.
Reporting to the Managing Director, the Head of Development is responsible for all aspects of technical delivery of the services provided by the business.


Included in this are the management of:


Project and product development
The development team
The development / production process and cycle
Development environment including source control
Specification and product development
Support arrangements both internal and outsourced
third party managed hosting and backups


Project and product development:


Project and product development is the primary requirement for the role. The candidate will be suitably skilled and experienced to be able to take on any level of development work required of a high level digital agency and mid-level software house, providing business related applications.
Required skills are not limited to the ones listed, but they do form the mainstay of technologies used. The ideal candidate will be used to working with latest technologies and techniques and there is no requirement for any legacy skills such as VB but a broad knowledge or understanding of similar technologies to those listed, such as Java, MySQL, PHP, F# may be beneficial.
The candidate would be expected to be fully competent in the development functional software and of Web API’s, web security, server caching, load balancing / synchronisation, optimisation payload and SQL queries, minification, obfuscation, O/auth and other common implementation requirements.



The development team:


The development team is currently a small team of four which will expand to seven during 2016.
While they are very competent with front end skills, they will look for assistance and guidance with C#, mentoring and oversight of their work.
The head of Development will be responsible for their standards and output and as such will carry out their reviews and any disciplinary proceedings.
